One thing I love about Mexico is that it’s stuffed to the gills with adorable beach towns, which are often less crowded than and an easy drive from bigger hubs like Cancún and Puerto Vallarta. About an hour’s drive north from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is just such a place. Each street is a parade of cute shops and cafés, the pace is unhurried, and the beach is never more than a couple of blocks away. Here are a few items for the perfect Sayulita to-do list.

Have Lunch at Don Pedro’s

Don Pedro’s has a deck that looks right out over the beach, a nice complement to its menu, which is filled with fresh seafood. Even on a warm day, a plate of grilled fish, steamed veggies, and whipped potatoes hit the spot. (I only managed to get a photo of my margarita, and a bad one at that, but you can check out the menu here.)

…or a surfboard. There’s plenty of room to stretch out or walk on the sand, but if you’re not too full, you can also rent a surfboard, stand-up paddleboard, or kayak from vendors like Wildmex, Lunazul Surfing, and Quiverito. First-time surfers can sign up for lessons, and pros can paddle out on their own to find the perfect swell.

Walk off your margarita weight and shop for jewelry, pottery, and Dia De Los Muertos-inspired art at the dozens of boutiques in the middle of town. Street vendors offer everything from Turkish-style towels to decorative fluorescent pom-poms for just a few pesos.

Grab a Frozen Banana to Go

When you’re ready for dessert, stroll over to Choco Banana for a sweet treat that’s dipped in chocolate and rolled in granola, rainbow sprinkles, or toasted coconut. They’re gooey, creamy, and crunchy—the best beach-weather treat in town. (This spot also sells more substantial food and whole-bean coffee, which I bought a big bag of to take home.)

What are your mustn’t-miss spots in Sayulita?
